Moonmunch
Privacy policy
The short version
- Moonmunch keeps your progress and settings on your phone.
- This version sends nothing about you to us or to anyone else. It has no ads, no purchases, no account and no analytics or crash-reporting service. It plays offline.
- Game analytics only writes notes about your play to your phone's own system log. That log stays on your phone. In the EU, the UK and Switzerland it stays off unless you turn it on; elsewhere it starts on and you can turn it off.
- Uninstall Moonmunch and everything it stored is deleted.
- Questions? Email hello@squenchstudios.com.
Who we are
Moonmunch is a game by Squench Studios. Squench Studios is not a company yet. It is the trading name of Dino Kingsley-Rizzo, an independent game developer based in South Africa.
In this policy, "we" and "us" mean Dino Kingsley-Rizzo, trading as Squench Studios. We decide how the data described here is used. Under South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), that makes us the "responsible party"; under European data protection law, the "controller". When Squench Studios becomes a company, we will update this page to name it.
What this policy covers
This policy covers the Moonmunch game for Android, from Google Play (app ID com.squenchstudios.moonmunch), and this website. It describes what the game does today. The section Ads, analytics and purchases later says what we will do before that changes.
What the game keeps on your phone
The game saves a few small files in its own storage on your phone:
-
Game progress
Moons beaten and how long each took, Biomass and Void Shards, mutation levels, your daily streak and missions, best scores, how many runs and sessions you have played, which first-time milestones you have reached, and the date you first opened the game. This keeps your progress between sessions.
Stays on your phone -
Settings
Whether sound and vibration are on.
Stays on your phone -
Your privacy choices
What you chose on the privacy form, when, and which version of the form you answered. It also notes whether laws like the GDPR probably apply to you, which the game guesses from your phone's region and time zone settings (for example "GB" or "Europe/London"). It does not use your location.
Stays on your phone -
A random player ID
A random string of letters and numbers, made the first time you open the game. It is not based on your name, your phone, your Google account or your advertising ID. In this version it is used only if you turn on game analytics, to label the notes the game writes to your phone's log.
Stays on your phone
The game does not ask for your name, email address, age, location, contacts, photos or files. It has no account, no chat and no way to talk to other players. It does not read your advertising ID.
What leaves your phone
Nothing. This version of Moonmunch has no code that sends data over the internet. It has no ad network, no in-app purchases, no analytics or crash-reporting service, no account and no online features. The game engine's own (Unity's) analytics and crash-reporting services are switched off. You can play in flight mode.
The only way out of the game is the Privacy policy button, which opens this page in your web browser. That is your browser visiting our website (see This website).
Your privacy choices in the game
If you are in the EU, the UK or Switzerland, a privacy form called "Your data" appears the first time you open Moonmunch, before you play. Every choice on it starts off, and nothing is switched on unless you switch it on. The game judges where you are from your phone's region and time zone settings, and shows the form if it cannot tell.
Everywhere else the game does not ask: game analytics starts on, and you can turn it off. Wherever you are, you can change your mind at any time in Settings > Privacy > Change.
- Game analytics. Notes about how you play (for example runs started and ended, moons beaten, upgrades picked, currency earned and spent, and how long you played) and reports of errors in the game. In this version, turning it on only writes these notes, with your random player ID, to your phone's own system log. That log is temporary and stays on your phone. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else. With it off, these notes are not written.
- Personalised ads. This version has no ads, so the form does not ask about them. If we add ads, we will update this policy first and explain the choice. In the EU, the UK and Switzerland the game will ask you before any ad is shown, the choice will start off, and with it off, ads will not be chosen using your data.
Ads, analytics and purchases later
To keep Moonmunch free to play, we expect to add some of these in future versions:
- an analytics service, to learn how the game is played;
- a crash-reporting service, to find and fix crashes;
- advertising networks, and partners that help pick which ad to show, for ads between runs and ads you can choose to watch for a reward;
- in-app purchases through Google Play's billing system.
Before any of these goes live, we will update this policy to name each provider and say what data it receives, why and for how long. We will update the Data safety section on the game's Google Play page at the same time. Where your permission is needed, the game will ask you first, and the choice will start off.
Google Play
You get Moonmunch from Google Play, which Google runs. Google handles downloads, updates, reviews and, if we ever sell anything, payments. It does this under Google's own privacy policy. We never see your payment details.
Google gives us reports about the game: numbers of installs by country, device and Android version; ratings and reviews; and crash and performance reports ("Android vitals") from people who let their phone share usage and diagnostic data with Google. These reports do not tell us who you are. If you write a review, it is public under your Google profile name, and we can read and reply to it.
If your phone backs up app data to your Google account, Android may include the game's files. Google handles that backup. We cannot see it.
Emails and testing
If you email us, we receive your email address and what you write. We use it only to answer you and to fix problems you report. We delete it once the matter is closed, and within 12 months at most, unless the law requires us to keep it. Email to hello@squenchstudios.com passes through Cloudflare, which forwards it to our mailbox at Google (Gmail).
If you join a test of Moonmunch, we hold the email address you gave us, because Google Play needs it to let you in, and any feedback you send. We use them only to run the test. We delete the tester list when testing ends, or sooner if you ask to leave.
Under the GDPR and UK GDPR, our legal basis for this is our legitimate interest in answering you and running the test.
This website
This website uses no cookies, analytics or trackers, and it loads nothing from other websites. Like every website, it is served by a hosting company, Cloudflare. Its servers receive your IP address and browser details when you visit, and may keep them in server logs for a short time, for security.
Selling and sharing
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for advertising. In this version the game sends us nothing, so there is nothing to share. We would only disclose something we hold, such as an email from you, if the law required it.
Security
The game's files live in its own app storage on your phone. On Android 11 and later, other apps cannot open them, and Android encrypts your phone's storage when it has a screen lock. The files hold no personal details. Our email account uses a strong password and two-step verification.
Keeping and deleting data
Everything the game stores stays on your phone until you delete it. You can:
- Uninstall Moonmunch. Android deletes all of its files, including your random player ID and privacy choices.
- Clear it without uninstalling. In your phone's Settings, open Apps > Moonmunch > Storage > Clear storage. The names vary a little between phones.
- Reset your progress only. In the game, open Settings > Reset save and tap again to confirm. This wipes your progress and your sound and vibration settings. It keeps your privacy choices and your random player ID.
- Ask us. Email hello@squenchstudios.com. The game sends us no data, so we have none to look up or delete. We will delete any emails you have sent us.
There are no accounts, so there is no account to delete.
Children
Moonmunch is made for people aged 13 and over. It is not directed at children under 13, and it is listed on Google Play for ages 13 and up. The game collects no personal data from anyone, children included. If you believe a child under 13 has sent us personal information, for example by email, contact us and we will delete it.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example South Africa, the EU, the UK, Switzerland or some US states), you may have the right to ask what personal data we hold about you, to correct it, to delete it, to get a copy of it, and to object to how we use it. You can also complain to your local data protection authority. In South Africa that is the Information Regulator (inforegulator.org.za).
The game's data is on your phone, so you control it directly (see Keeping and deleting data). For anything we hold, such as your emails, write to hello@squenchstudios.com. We will reply within one month.
Changes to this policy
We will update this page before the game uses data in any new way, and change the effective date at the top. If a change affects a choice you made, the game will show the privacy form again so you can choose. You can ask us for earlier versions of this policy.
